Background
Snuggled in the Himalayan mountains between India and China, Nepal is the location of Mount Everest and home to over 26 million people. Although Nepal is a poor country, it is rich in magnificent scenery and cultural treasures. The political landscape in Nepal was torn apart in June 2001 when Crown Prince Dipendra massacred most of the royal family, including King Birendra. Civil strife erupted in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu.
Prince Gyanendra, the brother of King Birendra, ascended to the throne following the murder of his brother. He has had to face many challenges, in particular a Maoist rebellion against the government which has claimed over 5,000 lives since it began. Numerous peace talks and ceasefires have failed.
Nepal ranks among the world's poorest countries. The children available for adoption from Nepal either have no living birthparents or have been abandoned by their birthparents because of abysmal poverty. The Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Welfare is the Nepalese government office responsible for adoptions in Nepal.
